Background of the Study
Kaltungo Local Government Area (LGA) in Gombe State, Nigeria, is home to a diverse population of ethnic groups, including the Tangale, Fulani, and Kanuri. The region’s communal coexistence has often been shaped by complex geopolitical factors, such as historical conflicts, ethnic rivalries, and political affiliations. Over the years, these factors have influenced social interactions, the distribution of resources, and overall community harmony. Geopolitical divisions, including competition for land, water, and political power, have often exacerbated tensions between different ethnic groups in Kaltungo, resulting in conflicts that undermine communal coexistence. Recent studies suggest that ethnic-based political movements and access to resources play crucial roles in maintaining or disturbing the balance of peace (Adamu & Aliyu, 2023). Understanding how these geopolitical factors affect communal relations in Kaltungo is critical for the development of strategies to foster unity and peaceful coexistence among its diverse communities. This study seeks to examine the role of these geopolitical factors in shaping the social and political dynamics in Kaltungo LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Kaltungo LGA, communal coexistence has been severely impacted by geopolitical factors that have fostered ethnic tension and political divisions. Conflicts over land ownership, competition for local resources, and political manipulation based on ethnic lines have all contributed to divisions between communities. These geopolitical challenges hinder the development of effective social policies and undermine the sense of unity among the people. The problem of communal disharmony is compounded by the absence of conflict resolution mechanisms that can address the root causes of the tension. This study will explore how these geopolitical factors contribute to the disruption of peaceful coexistence in Kaltungo LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the geopolitical factors contributing to ethnic tensions in Kaltungo LGA.

  • To assess the impact of these tensions on communal coexistence in Kaltungo.

  • To propose strategies for promoting peaceful coexistence in Kaltungo LGA by addressing the underlying geopolitical issues.

1.4 Research Questions

  • What are the key geopolitical factors contributing to ethnic tensions in Kaltungo LGA?

  • How do these geopolitical factors affect communal coexistence in the region?

  • What strategies can be adopted to foster peaceful coexistence in Kaltungo LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical factors, including ethnic divisions and political rivalries, contribute significantly to the disruption of communal coexistence in Kaltungo LGA.

  • Ethnic tensions caused by geopolitical factors negatively affect social relations and development in Kaltungo LGA.

  • Addressing the geopolitical issues affecting Kaltungo will improve communal coexistence and peacebuilding in the region.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide crucial insights into the role of geopolitical factors in shaping communal relations in Kaltungo LGA. It will be valuable for policymakers, local government authorities, and community leaders seeking to implement conflict resolution strategies that foster peaceful coexistence (Adamu & Aliyu, 2023). The findings will also contribute to the academic discourse on the relationship between geopolitics and community harmony, offering recommendations for resolving conflicts and promoting unity in ethnically diverse regions.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is focused solely on Kaltungo Local Government Area in Gombe State and addresses the geopolitical factors that influence communal relations in the region. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing local conflict data and measuring the direct influence of political factors on ethnic tensions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Factors: Social, political, and economic forces influenced by ethnicity, politics, and resource distribution that shape local governance and community dynamics (Adamu & Aliyu, 2023).

  • Communal Coexistence: The peaceful and harmonious living together of diverse ethnic or social groups in a community.

  • Kaltungo Local Government Area: A region in Gombe State, Nigeria, known for its ethnic diversity and historical communal tensions (Adamu & Aliyu, 2023).
